Mission and direction

ARIES is not building a bridge inspection tool. It is building the body of knowledge that connects data, structures and decisions: how what we measure on a structure becomes what its owner decides to do about it.

Sensing and AI produce data. Structural engineering turns data into knowledge about a structure. Decision methods and data standards turn that knowledge into maintenance decisions across a whole network. Every project at ARIES sits somewhere on that chain, and the chain is the product. Bridges come first, because that is where our flagship program and published work are; the same chain applies to buildings and other structures.

Mission

  1. Research and develop technologies that inspect, assess and predict the condition of infrastructure using artificial intelligence, digital twins and autonomous inspection systems.
  2. Develop materials and innovations that make structural systems more durable and more sustainable.
  3. Transfer technology and provide academic services to government and industry, raising the standard of the country's infrastructure.
  4. Train researchers and engineers with advanced-technology skills in structural engineering.

How the pieces fit

Four layers, each feeding the next. A project is judged by which links of the chain it strengthens.

  1. 1

    Sensing

UAV imagery, LiDAR point clouds, vibration and strain sensors.

Who: Geospatial and Field Operations group · Produces: raw measurements of real structures

  2. 2

    Intelligence

Computer vision that classifies damage, digital twins that hold geometry, damage and behaviour in one model, machine-learning estimators of capacity.

Who: Structural Assessment and Digital Twin group · Produces: structured, comparable descriptions of condition

  3. 3

    Structural knowledge

Nonlinear finite-element assessment, random-field models of spatial corrosion, reliability updating from inspection data, durability of materials.

Who: Both groups; multi-hazard and materials groups as they open · Produces: how safe a structure is, and how that changes with time

  4. 4

    Decisions

Network-level prioritization, data standards owner agencies can adopt, training for the engineers who will use them.

Who: For the agencies that own and maintain bridges; at the research stage · Produces: which structure, which action, in what order

Road map

2026 to 2028

Build and prove

  • Bridge Intelligence: the full chain from UAV and LiDAR survey to network-level prioritization, built on a pilot bridge under the NRCT digital twin project
  • Data standards for bridge inspection and condition data that owner agencies can use directly
  • Every research project reports in a peer-reviewed publication
2028 onwards

Broaden and institutionalize

  • Open the Resilience and Multi-Hazard and the Advanced Materials groups with colleagues from related fields
  • A handbook and data standard for bridge inspection and assessment, developed with the agencies
  • Formal partnerships with universities abroad, moving from personal collaboration to center-level agreements
  • Graduates and research assistants who carry the methods into the agencies and companies that manage infrastructure

How we work

An engineer stays in the loop

AI proposes, people decide. Every automated detection is reviewed before it changes a rating.

Standards owners can adopt

Results are delivered in data formats and procedures that agencies can use without us in the room.

Research that gets published

Applied work and academic work are the same work. Each funded research project aims to report in a peer-reviewed venue.

Train people, not only tools

Students, research assistants and agency engineers learn the methods by working on real structures.

Work with us

Four doors into ARIES

Owner agencies and operators

Pilot the Bridge Intelligence chain on part of your network, and shape the data standard that comes out of it.

Universities and research groups

Joint proposals and student exchange on structural reliability, multi-hazard assessment and life-cycle management.

Graduate students

A thesis topic that is one link in the chain: survey, detection, twin, reliability or materials, on a real bridge.

Industry

Training for inspection engineers, and collaboration on materials, sensing and inspection technology.
